CFD: Streets reopened after gas leak cleared downtown

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston Fire Department officials say a gas leak shut down several streets on the peninsula.

According to a CFD spokesperson, around 11 a.m., crews working near 532 King Street reported a possible natural gas leak or odor.{}

CFD and Charleston Police responded to the area and closed King Street between Mary and Cannon streets. {}

Fire Chief Mike Julazadeh said the adjacent buildings were also evacuated as a safety precaution.

UPDATE from CFD: SCE&G crews have secured the scene at King and Woolfe streets. CFD units have cleared the scene and all routes are open as of 12:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident, said Julazadeh. He also said while contractors will continue to work in the area, King St. will be open for traffic.
