Charleston Fire Department hosting car seat check Wednesday
WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) -- For parents of small children who need car seats, the Charleston Fire Department is offering a free safety checkpoint this week.
On Wednesday, the Charleston Fire Department will team up with Safe Kids Trident Area program to perform free car seat checks. Fire officials recommend parents of children ages 0 to 12 stop by the checkpoint and get tips of safely installing a car seat.
The checkpoint is being held at Citadel Mall in West Ashley on Wednesday from 3-6 p.m.
Firefighters say, if possible, bring the car seat, the manual and the child that will use the seat.
According to Safe Kids Worldwide and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, properly installed safety seats ut the risk of fatality in an accident by 71 percent. The risk of serious injury drops by 67 percent.
Officials say the leading cause of death for children under the age of 12 is a car crash, and 3 out of 4 children are not as secure in their cars as they should be because the car seats are not installed correctly.
