Charleston man charged in Sumter home invasion

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) - A Charleston man has been arrested and charged with a home invasion shooting death in Sumter.

Thirty-one-year-old Jerry Ernest Ballard already was in jail when he was charged Thursday with murder, armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a crime.

Sumter sheriff's Lt. Robert Burnish said deputies were called to a home in May 2012 after someone kicked in the door of a home and shot Antonio Lavaughn Dixon. Burnish said the suspect took cash and drugs from Dixon's home.

Dixon died before medical personnel arrived.

Ballard was in jail on unrelated robbery charges. It was not clear if he has a lawyer on the latest charges.
