JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV)A former umpire and president for Low Country Little League faced a judge in bond court Friday. Alan Smith, 58, is charged with criminal sexual in the third degree.
Judge Linda Lombard set Smith's bond at $25,000. During the hearing, Smith spoke very little.
According to his attorney, he's a retired boilermaker and has been married to his wife, Pam Smith, for 38 years.
"They live in their own home on Johns Island. He has six brothers," said attorney, Michael Uricchio.
Police records show that on August 21st, Smith allegedly performed oral sex on a 17-year-old girl and exposed himself.
"It is my understanding he has no prior record your honor," stated Smith's attorney.
The victim spoke briefly before the judge, stating, "I just want to be sure that he doesn't have any contact with me."
According to the Low Country Little League website, Smith is still listed as an umpire and current president; however, Chris Downs, a spokesperson for Little League International, says that Smith is no longer associated with the local league or district.
"Our records show that the person in question is in no way involved as a volunteer with the local league or district. In fact, he has not been affiliated with Little League since April of 2011," stated Downs. "He has not been president of the local league since 2009. We will have no further comment, pending the outcome of the legal process."
Judge Linda Lombard ordered Smith to have no contact with the victim and is barred from within one block of her residence, school, and place of employment.
Smith's next court appearance is scheduled for December 7th in General Sessions.
