Charleston Southern edges VMI in 25-17 win

LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) - Larry Jones caught five passes for 103 yards, including the 48-yard go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, to lift Charleston Southern to a 25-17 win over VMI in a Big South Conference opener Saturday.

Charleston Southern (7-0, 1-0) was trailing 14-13 at the half but kept VMI (1-5, 0-1) out of the end zone the rest of the game. Daniel Croghan passed for 245 yards and two touchdowns, including a 27-yarder to Kevin Glears in the Buccaneers' opening drive and the 48-yarder to Jones in the fourth quarter.

Christian Reyes ran in a 4-yard TD and Mark Deboy kicked two 22-yard field goals for Charleston Southern.

VMI temporarily regained the lead in the third quarter with a 45-yard field goal by Dillon Christopher but couldn't hold it. Eric Kordenbrock, who last week became the school's all-time leading passer, threw for 263 yards and two touchdowns.
