Charleston wedding planner arrested for second time

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston police arrested a local wedding planner again on Friday for charges that were dropped{}earlier this year.

Robert Lawson Smith, also known as Lawson Roberts, is charged with three counts of breach of trust and four counts of financial card fraud.

He is currently being held on a $35,000 bond.

The charges were dismissed in February after officials with the Charleston Police Department testified that the warrant used to arrest Roberts did not include specifics, such as dates and when the card was used.

Roberts' attorney, David Aylor, said the charges stem from the exact same case, but specific dates were added. The dates span from the early spring of 2011 to May 14, 2011, which is the date{}the victim who accused Roberts of fraud was married.

According to the original incident report, the victim told police that she hired Smith under the business name White Tuxedo Productions to plan her wedding.

Wendy Shearer said back in January that she and her then-fianc Adam Shearer had a $50,000 budget for their May 2011 wedding. Shearer said a total of $69,000 showed up on their American Express and Visa credit cards after their honeymoon.

Shearer said after months of research, she discovered only $19,000 was supposed to be used to pay the vendors and Roberts pocketed $50,000.

The report states Shearer was contacted by the Visa Fraud Department that additional charges were showing up on their card totaling another $28,000. The report says Smith used the clients' credit card to pay off vendors that he failed to pay with the initial $63,000.
