Child attacked by pit bull, transported to MUSC

WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCIV) -- On Saturday animal control responded to the Colleton County Medical Center to a report of an animal bite.

At the hospital, officers found a 4-year-old boy with a severe bite on his head.

According to William Lynes with Colleton County Animal Control, the dog's owner was the injured child's great aunt.

The incident happened during a family Christmas party on Hampton Street in Walterboro. Lynes said the child was in the yard when he was attacked by a pit bull who was on a "runner." Family members say the boy was outside with about 50 people within a few feet. They say things may have been worse if they were not there.

Lynes said the dog got within the child's reach and grabbed the child by the head.

The child has since been transported to MUSC where he is in stable condition. The child received 32-34 staples in his head as a result of the attack. The dog has been quarantined and the owner could be cited.

Animal control plans to meet with the owner on Tuesday.
