Children with eating disorders can now be treated locally

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Medical University of South Carolina is starting a new program that will facilitate treatment for children diagnosed with eating disorders.

According to hospital officials, kids with bulimia or anorexia had to travel out of state to be treated.

"We don't think the children who need this outpatient treatment should have to leave the state," said Rita Ryan M.D., MUSC Department of Pediatrics chair. "Right now, when intensive outpatient treatment is needed, and it often is, these children and young adults have had to go out of state, primarily to the program at UNC."{}Dr. Ryan said the program is made possible through a large donation coupled with start up funds from other sources. The hospital is currently looking for a physician, psychiatrist, or a psychologist to fill the seat of program director.
