Childs approved for post at McCormick school

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Former state education superintendent Meka Childs has been approved for a new position at the state's residential school for troubled youth.

The State newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/1qn8FYM) the South Carolina Board of Education on Wednesday approved Childs' nomination to be the chief operating officer of the John de la Howe School in McCormick.

State Education Superintendent Mick Zais chose Childs for the position after she finished sixth in the Republican primary for the job he is giving up this year.

Childs had been a deputy superintendent under Zais until she stepped down to seek the GOP nomination.

An education department spokesman said Childs will be paid $8,000 a month for the four-month job at the school.
