Coast Guard rescues man, dog on Santee River

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Coast Guard crew rescued a stranded sailor and his dog Thursday evening on the Santee River just south of Georgetown.

According to a release, the Coast Guard Sector Charleston command center received a distress call at about 4:18 p.m. from the owner of the 25-foot sailing vessel, Margin.

The owner told command center officials his vessel ran aground near the South Santee River and was surrounded by shallow water, making assistance by surface assets impossible, according to the release.

A Coast Guard helicopter{} from Air Facility Charleston went to the scene and lowered a rescue swimmer to help the man and his dog into a rescue basket.

Crews took the pair to Georgetown.

Officials said neither the man nor his dog were injured.

The owner is planning to contact a salvage company to recover the vessel, officials said.
