KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- The U.S. Coast Guard and North Charleston firefighters responded to a group of three boaters in distress in the breakers off Kiawah Island.

According to officials, a 27-foot boat was taking on water at the entrance to the Stono River near Kiawah Island.

Officials report the owner of the 27-foot sailing vessel contacted the Coast Guard via radio to say the boat had run aground.

The Coast Guard had a boat on the scene but they could not get close enough to the sailboat because of shallow waters. An air rescue team deployed a swimmer who pulled the boaters from the vessel into a helicopter.

The three people were safely pulled from the boat and taken to Wappoo Cut Boat Landing. No one was injured, officials said.

No pollution has been reported from the grounded vessel. The owner of the boat is scheduled to arrange salvage operations for his vessel.
