College Of Charleston walks off against Georgia Southern
Greensboro, N.C. - Ashton Jarrett's two-out single in the bottom of the seventh scored Becca Mueller from second and gave the Cougars a 3-2 victory to survive and force the "if necessary" game with Georgia Southern Friday afternoon.
Hope Klicker came on in relief of Stephanie Saylors and limited the Eagles to four hits and no runs in 5.0 innings of work. She allowed one walk and struck out four. SoCon Pitcher of the Year Sarah Purvis was handed the loss for Georgia Southern, going 6.2 innings and allowing six hits, three runs, one walk and two strikeouts.
Becca Mueller led the Cougars going 2-for-2 with two runs scored while Kristy Giragosian went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Alexa Lewis went 2-for-4 to lead Georgia Southern went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs.
Georgia Southern's Lewis led off the game with a single through the right side. She was thrown out at second when Kourtny Thomas reached on fielder's choice and Shelby Morrill then sent a two-out home over the fence in right field to give the Eagles the early 2-0 lead.
College of Charleston got a lead-off single in the bottom of the second by Chandler Frisbie, then Becca Mueller sent a double to deep right to put runners in scoring position with two outs. Kristy Giragosian then sent a bloop single over the shortstop's head to tie the game at two.
In the top of the fourth, Georgia Southern's Kaitlyn Johnson drew a one-out walk, then advanced to second on a ground out. Pinch-hitter Savanah Coon singled through the right side and Johnson was called out on a close play at the plate to end the CofC threat in the top of the fourth and keep the game tied at two.
The two pitchers continued to battle into the later innings. In the top of the sixth, Hope Klicker struck out four batters after Kaitlyn Johnson reached on a two-out passed ball. In the bottom half, Purvis gave up a two-out single to Mackenzie Maples, but got a strikeout to end the inning.
Klicker worked around a one-out single in the top half of the seventh to preserve the 2-2 tie. In the bottom half, Becca Mueller was hit by a pitch to lead-off the inning and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Then two batters later, Ashton Jarrett singled to left field to score Mueller and give the Cougars the 3-2 victory.
College of Charleston moves to 37-19 on the season while Georgia Southern falls to 30-28. The teams will meet in a win-or-go-home game later this afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
