Colleton man sentenced to 35 years for robbing elderly couple
WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCIV) - A Colleton County man wassentenced to 35 years in prison Thursday for robbing an elderly couple at aWalterboro hotel.
According to the solicitor's office, jurors convicted MackWashington, Jr. of two counts of armed robbery, two counts of kidnapping andpossession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
The trial took four days.
Prosecutors showed that Washington and another teen plannedto rob people at a motel in January 2012. The hid behind a wall and waited foran elderly couple to enter their room.
According to the solicitor, Washington grabbed the womanfrom behind and held a knife to her throat while demanding valuables. Hethreatened to kill her. Washington and the other person made off with $14,000in valuables.
A day later, investigators got a tip that Washington hadstashed two guns at an apartment. They later learned the guns had been stolenfrom the couple.
Prosecutors during the trial linked Washington to the gunsand the co-defendant admitted to investigators that he and Washington hadcommitted the crime. In June 2012, Washington was arrested.
Washington had four prior convictions for burglary, strongarmed robbery, accessory, and resisting arrest among other crimes.
Washington has to serve 85 percent of his sentence before heis eligible for parole.
