Community gathers to remember teen who died on diving trip

JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- Family and friends gathered Sunday at James Island Charter High School to remember the life of a teen who died on a diving trip off the coast with his father.

Tristen Allen died a few weeks ago while diving off the coast of Folly Beach with his dad.

Ty Stubbs, who played football with Allen and considered him a best friend, says the past three weeks have been difficult.

"It's hard. Everyday I go home and don't have anyone to call or talk to," said Stubbs.

"He was the best leader you could ask for just because I think everyone on the team wanted to be just like him because he was just the man," said Keith Ayer, Allen's high school football teammate.

Allen's memorial started with a prayer. Some presented slideshows of their favorite photos, and his parents gave a speech.

"Your love has been so overwhelming during these last three weeks of misery that I've caught myself smiling more often than I thought would've been possible," said Allen's parents.

Memories are now what people who knew Allen have to hold onto. Many signed pictures of Allen, leaving small notes to the family. Some painted Allen's jersey number, 41, on their faces.

Allen's uncle says the family will never be the same without him.

"He meant so much to our family and everyone who knew him that there will definitely be a void, but we will stay strong and be there for each other," said Robert Allen.

Allen's uncle says his nephew maybe gone, but his love still remains and is shared with all who knew him.
