CAINHOY, SC (WCIV) -- A close-knit community is mourning the loss of two brothers.
The teens died Sunday morning when their jeep ran off the road and hit a tree in Berkeley County. Family friends tell us they were on their way to church at the time of the accident.
In the pouring rain, Berkeley County crews worked to rescue 19-year-old Matthew, and 17-year-old Kelvin Richardson. Investigators say Matthew was driving when the teens crashed around 10 a.m., on Cainhoy Road. But the strong response could not save the brothers. The Berkeley County corner said they died at the scene of the accident.
Matthew was a 2011 graduate of Hanahan High, while Kelvin was a junior at the school.
The tragedy has shaken their community. Monday the Berkeley County School District issued a statement in response to the deaths.
It reads in part :
"Since learning of the news, the school has implemented a crisis response plan for students and staff. Additional school counselors and district-level support staff are on-hand at the school today (Monday), assisting the community in processing this tragedy."
Administrators say counseling and grief support will continue to be available Tuesday.
The exact cause of this deadly crash remains under investigation by the state highway patrol. According to the coroner, the teens were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident.
Funeral arrangements have not been determined.
