      NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) Learning can be more fun and effective in the great outdoors.{}

      Wednesday, Lowe's volunteers began construction on a new outdoor classroom at Burns Elementary School in North Charleston.{}{}

      The new classroom consists of a raised platform area as well as plenty of benches for the children to sit on.{}

      Social worker Corrie Gladstein said the new classroom will be used for a variety of educational activities such as teaching science and environmental curriculum and letting the children conduct plays and performances outside.{}

      "It's just a nice setting, it's a good opportunity to get the children outside and let them show what they're proud of," Gladstein said. "It's an exciting time for our school."{}

      It's all part of the Lowe's Heroes Project.

      Each Lowe's store around the country takes on a project to help give back to the local community. This project was made possible by both the West Ashley and North Charleston Lowe's stores.{}{}

      Jim Jones, manager for the West Ashley Lowe's, said, {}"A lot of the different schools here in the area are in need of sprucing up, and the curriculum has the students coming outside to learn, so we just wanted to give them an area where they're able to learn and enjoy the space."{}{}

      Some Burns Elementary students even came out to help the volunteers with the project.{}{}

      Jones said the classroom is built to last, even through rough weather conditions.{}{}

      "Hopefully the kids will be able to enjoy it for years to come," he said.
