CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Continental Tire has announced plans to create a storage complex on the north end of the former Naval Base in Charleston.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that the complex marks the first industrial development planned on the former Naval Base following settlement of a intergovernmental dispute over rail access.
Continental manufactures tires in Sumter County. City officials said they have been told the company is expected to store raw materials and finished products at the base site.
The S.C. Department of Commerce Division of Public Railways owns the land, which the city has agreed to rezone for heavy industrial use.
