Contraband find uncovers sexual relationship between inmate, officer
COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) - A cellphone led to the unraveling of a sexual relationship between a female inmate and an officer at the Colleton County Detention Center.
Now the detention officer has been arrested and charged with sexual misconduct with an inmate.
According to a release from Sheriff Andy Strickland, officials found a cellphone on March 30 in a female inmate's belongings, which is illegal for her to possess. An investigation revealed that an officer at the jail, identified as William Anderson Montjoy, gave the inmate the phone, Strickland said.
The sheriff's release states that the officer sent a series of nude pictures to the inmate. However, the two did not have sex, Strickland said, adding that any kind of sexual relationship between an inmate and an officer is illegal.
Montjoy was charged with furnishing contraband to an inmate and sexual misconduct with an inmate. Bond was set at $25,000 on each charge and he is being held in a secondary facility, Strickland said.
Strickland said it appeared Montjoy was a good detention officer and well-liked by his colleagues, but his alleged acts are inappropriate and illegal.
"Inappropriate or illegal conduct will not be tolerated during my administration," said Strickland. "We are sworn to uphold and enforce the law and we will do so, even if the accused is one of our own."
The Colleton County sheriff did not release the name of the inmate.
