Conway woman died in Georgetown boating accident

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Conway woman died on a fishing expedition in Georgetown when the boat she and her husband were in capsized.

Georgetown County Coroner Kenneth Johnson identified the woman as 66-year-old Delores Jones. Johnson said the couple was near the light house at the time of the incident.

A Coast Guard crew was on a training mission in Winyah Bay when they spotted the capsized boat in shallow water around 11 a.m. Officials said a man was on top of the boat.

He told Coast Guard rescuers that the boat's anchor line got caught in the propeller. He said he tried to pull the motors out of the water to free the line which ended up making the vessel unstable and caused it to capsize.

The man said when he surfaced, his wife was drifting away.

He said neither of them could swim or were wearing life jackets, so he tried to flag down passing boats.

Jones' body was found a short time later about a mile from the spot where the boat capsized.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. and Mrs. Jones and their{}family, friends{}and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," said Sean Shrum, Coast Guard Sector Charleston command duty officer. "It's heartbreaking for all the responders involved when an accident ends in tragedy."

An autopsy has been planned for Wednesday morning to determine a cause of death, but no foul play is suspected.
