Coroner: Missing diver's remains found
FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials from the the Charleston County Coroner's confirmed that the remains of a missing teen have been located.
The official would not release any more information other than the fact that the remains were identified as 19-year-old Tristen Allen. Where exactly he was found and the cause of death are not being released at this time.
A spokeswoman close to the family said Thursday afternoon that reports made by other Charleston media outlets that Allen's body were found are inaccurate. The spokeswoman reiterated what the coroner's office reported -- that Allen's remains were found.
The coroner's office added the remains were tested and through forensic evidence, they were able to identify them as Allen's.
Officials from the Department of Natural Resources said Allen's body was found last Friday, but refused to provide more details on the matter. DNR officials said the recovery happened Friday afternoon near the reef where Allen and his father had been diving.
The announcement comes just a day after the Allen family called off all private searches.
U.S. Coast Guard officials called off their search on July 15. Officials said crews covered more than 2,700 nautical miles and continuing to search would not increase their probability of finding the teen.
According to officials, Tristen and his father were about 13 miles southeast of Folly Beach July 12, diving from their 22-foot Carolina skiff. Crews say the two men went into the water around 2 p.m. for a 30-minute, 60-feet-deep dive.
The father surfaced but his son did not, officials said.
A tribute event will be held at James Island Charter High School on Sunday, August 3. It will run from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.
