Cottageville lottery winner shares with girlfriend

COTTAGEVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Powerball ticket worth $1 million was sold in Cottageville for Saturday night's $338 million drawing and the winner has claimed his prize.

According to officials with the South Carolina Education Lottery,the winner spent only $20 for a shot at the jackpot. While he didn't win $320 million, he did win a million dollars.

"I told my girlfriend you have to play to win it," he said. "Only people like us don't win."

According to a release from lottery officials, the winner checked his ticket Sunday morning over a pot of coffee, and one row matched all five of the white ball numbers drawn. Had the Powerball number matched, a share of the $320 million jackpot would have been his.{}

The release says when he stood up to go tell his girlfriend, his heart was pounding.{}

"I was a nervous wreck after that," he said. "That much money will change our lives."

"He told me I could get whatever I want," his girlfriend said.{}

The millionaire is buying a brand new truck and wants his girlfriend to have a new car too.

"We ran out of cola," he said explaining why he stopped at the Cottageville BP where he saw the posted jackpot and decided to play.

The Cottageville BP received a commission of $10,000 for selling the claimed ticket. This is the second $1 million winning ticket sold at this location.{} In February of last year, a Summerville woman won $1 million on a Mega Millions ticket.
