First reading approved to fund Aeronautical Training Center

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Charleston County Council's Finance Committee approved the first reading of a motion to fund a portion of a new aeronautical training center at a meeting on Thursday.Last month, Trident Technical College announced plans to build a $79 million center at its North Charleston campus.David Hansen, the school's director of public information, said it would provide training in aircraft assembly, aircraft maintenance and avionics. It would also provide training for suppliers, vendors and other aeronautical-related industries.According to the meeting's agenda, $51.25 million (or 65 percent) of the money needed for the project would come from the state. An additional $18.25 million (24 percent) would come from Charleston County, $8 million would come from the TTC property tax bond millage and $1 million would come from the city of North Charleston. Hansen said the school owns 25 acres of land adjacent to the main campus in North Charleston that is currently undeveloped. He said the site was established in 2006 as an Enterprise Campus. If construction of the facility is approved, it will be built on that land. The cost would cover infrastructure, roads, utilities, parking and site improvements. The project still has to make it past at least two more readings by the Charleston County Council.
