Police: Man confesses to shooting himself in hand

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston City police and Charleston County EMSresponded to a reported shooting in downtown Charleston, a supervisor at Consolidated Dispatch confirmed. The victim later admitted to shooting himself.

Officials with EMS confirmed one male patient was transported from the area with minor injuries. He was in stable condition.

Police later said the man had been shot in the hand. The shooting reportedly happened near America and Amherst streets in Charleston's east side, but police said they have not yet been able to find a scene there.{}

The man, identified by police as 20-year-old Marquise Edwards, later said he shot himself. He told police that he was trying to open the cylinder of the gun when he shot himself, according to a statement from police.{}

Edwards was charged with filing a false police report and is currently being held in the Al Cannon Detention Center.
