AWENDAW, S.C. (WCIV) -- The only things that appeared to be left standing after an early morning house fire Friday were the walls.
Awendaw fire officials say the fire along Highway 17 north started just after 2:30 a.m. A woman woke up to the smell of smoke. She and her husband got out of the home just as the roof caught fire, according to officials.
The rural location of the fire is forcing firefighters to shuttle in water trucks back and forth from a water source. There are no working hydrants in the area.
The home appears to be a total loss. One lane of Highway 17 northbound is closed while officials remain on the scene.
