Charleston, SC - The North Greenville University football team suffered its first loss of the 2013 season, dropping a 28-14 decision at the hands of the Buccaneers of Division I-AA opponent Charleston Southern University on Saturday afternoon.
The Crusader offense was given the ball to start the game and quickly put points on the board, using a 3-play, 71-yard drive to go ahead 7-0 after a 60-yard touchdown reception by senior receiver Freddie Martino.
The Buccaneers also struck quickly with a score on their first drive of the game on a three-yard, run by running back Christian Reyes, before scoring again in the second quarter on a one-yard scamper by quarterback Daniel Cogan to earn the 14-7 halftime lead.
After Crogan scored on a three-yard run in the third quarter to go ahead by two touchdowns, the Crusader offense used a 7-play, 74-yard drive to close the gap with an 18-yard run by Trey Walker with 1:25 remaining in the third.
Charleston Southern used a 15-yard run by Alexander Cruz to make the score 28-14 in favor of the Buccaneers and put the game away with an interception deep in their own territory with 1:45 remaining to secure the home victory.
On offense, Nelson Hughes had another strong performance, completing 25-of-37 pass attempts for 334 yards and one touchdown. Martino once again led all receivers, catching 13 passes for 179 yards and a score, while freshman Tyrecous Garrett finished with 81 yards on five receptions. On the ground, T. Walker accumulated 76 yards on nine carries with one touchdown.
Senior linebacker Braelen Meredith finished with a game-high 10 tackles, including one tackle for loss and two pass breakups. Fellow linebacker Reubyn Walker recorded nine tackles in the game, while freshman Sam Houston totaled seven tackles and fumble recovery in first career start.
The Crusaders (4-1) will return home for a South Atlantic Conference alliance matchup with Lenoir Rhyne University on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. in Tigerville.
