(CSU SID) CHARLESTON, S.C. - After waiting out two days of rain in the Charleston area, Charleston Southern and Marist split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon to salvage a total washout of their three-game series. The Bucs won the opener, 9-0, while Marist took the nightcap, 2-1.Charleston Southern moves to 4-3 on the year with the split, while Marist moves to 2-2."Our first week of the season, we've been dealing with weather and whether or not we would get to play," CSU head coach Stuart Lake said following Sunday's doubleheader. "The first game, we came out and responded well. The second game, their starter really pitched well. It was tough for both of us to wait this long to play this weekend."In what was supposed to be nine-game home stand to open 2013, the Bucs played only six games at CSUBallpark thus far and have had three days completely washed out. CSU has also had to settle for playing three seven-inning contests Game 1 - Charleston Southern 9, Marist 0 (7 inn.) Bucs' starter Ryan Gunther shutdown Marist through six innings and Chase Shelton was 3-for-3 with four RBIs as CSU blanked the Red Foxes in Game 1, 9-0.Gunther (WP, 1-0) was the story for CSU. The senior struck out eight in 6.1 innings of work. He scattered three singles to get his first win of the season."Ryan has pitched so well for us for a year and two games," Lake said. "It was exciting for us to finally get a win for him. It was also good for our offense to answer when we don't know our opponent and we haven't have been on the field in a few days."Shelton did his part as well, coming through with RBI singles in the first and third innings. He also had a two-run double in the sixth as the Bucs' put the game away.Shortstop Alex Tomasovich added three hits and an RBI, while John Faircloth and Bobby Ison both went 2-for-3. Ison scored a season-high three runs for CSU.The Bucs loaded the bases in the first on a pair of walks and a long single by Tomasovich off the base of wall in right. CSU plated its first first-inning run on the year on a sharply-hit single by Shelton to right field.Marist starter Brett Houseal settled down to retire the last two Bucs of the inning as the Red Foxes worked out of an early jam.The Bucs built their lead to 6-0 with four runs in the fifth as Ison had a leadoff double and CSU took advantage of two walks, a Marist error, and a hit batsman to load the bases.Ison reached again to lead off the sixth with a single to right. Faircloth followed with a double to the warning track in right andShelton added his third hit of the day to clear the bases as CSU extended its lead to the final score, 9-0.Game 2 -Marist 2, Charleston Southern 1 (7 inn.) Marist starter Kevin McCarthy held the Bucs to four hits, all singles, and struck out four to give the Red Foxes a 2-1 to close the weekend.McCarthy saw CSU take a 1-0 lead in the third before holding the Bucs scoreless over their final four at-bats.Marist picked up a run in the fourth and fifth to get the win.The Bucs took a 1-0 lead as Harrison Wilkins singled and scored on an Ison single in the third.Marist answered back on an RBI single from Mark Brennan in the top of the fourth. Brennan lined a single into left field off Bucs' starter Kevin Buran (LP, 0-2) to score Eric Helmrich, who was hit by a pitch to open the inning.The Red Foxes took the lead in the sixth as centerfielder Matt Pagano singled and scored on a squeeze play by Nick McQuail.Wilkins was 1-for-2 with a run scored.Pagano was 2-for-3 and shortstop Zach Shank went 2-for-4 to lead Marist.The Buccaneers return home on Wednesday to host The Citadel. First pitch is at 2 p.m. at CSU Ballpark.
