Cybersecurity competition aboard USS Yorktown

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- The U.S.S. Yorktown faced its share of enemy threats in its day. On Saturday, a new crew aboard The Fighting Lady will face a more modern threat- cyber-attacks.Several teams from local high schools will participate in CyperPatriot VI, a national high school cyber defense competition.

The competition allows students to better their skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to help them succeed in the future."Conducting CyberPatriot aboard the unique surroundings of the USS Yorktown allows students to feel they are in pursuit of something that has a larger significance beyond winning a computer game competition," said Shawn Gordon,{} Air Force Association Charleston Chapter- CyberPatriot vice president.{} "The close quarters also heighten the sense of urgency during the computer scenarios to identify the problem and resolve it quickly just as would be done under battle conditions."Keith Grybowski, director of education at Patriots Point, said hosting the event is another way for local students to learn what the museum has to offer."When these high schoolers step on board the USS Yorktown, we want them to understand it's more than a historical aircraft carrier," he said. "It's a place where they can come learn and expand their knowledge of history, science and technology.{} These students are our future and they have our support."This is the second year for the event aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown.

The event starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday and ends at noon. It will continue at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
