MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV) - Construction to replace a bridge in Moncks Corner that was taken out by a derailed train is ahead of schedule, according to the state's transportation department.
Secretary of Transportation Janet Oakley said the project hit a major milestone last week when girders were delivered and installed.
"Even with storm delays occurring on many recent evenings, the contractor reached this milestone and continues to make significant progress. We are very pleased with the project so far," she said.
Department of Transportation Commissioner Jim Rozier said he was happy to learn the contractor was ahead of schedule. The bridge is being built by Cape Romain Contractors.
"I am glad to know the contractor is ahead of schedule. This is very good news. I am so very proud of how diligently SCDOT staff, Cape Romain Contractors, Inc., and CSX Railroad have worked together on this project. They have cooperated amazingly well," Rozier said.
The bridge collapsed after being hit by a CSX train on April 28. A short time later, the DOT awarded the $3 million contract to Cape Romain Contractors to complete the bridge by Oct. 25.
The project includes incentives to finish ahead of schedule.
