COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Country music star Darius Rucker says this year's graduating class from the University of South Carolina should follow their dreams and make room for service to others.
Rucker received an honorary doctor-of-music degree during Saturday's commencement exercises. The State of Columbia reported that School President Harris Pastides told Rucker that while he's a rock star and a cool guy, he's now "Dr. Gamecock."
Rucker, who with three fellow students formed Hootie and the Blowfish in 1986, told the graduates to "find something that makes you want to give 'til it hurts"
The university also awarded an honorary doctorate to Wofford College president Benjamin B. Dunlap, a Harvard grad and Rhodes Scholar who is retiring from his post.Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
