Dash camera video released of McCaffrey traffic stop
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials with the Travelers Rest Police Department have released dash camera video of the traffic stop of a man local authorities believe had something to do with a woman's disappearance.
The video released Thursday shows the March 18 stop of Robert McCaffrey. According to an incident report, McCaffrey was driving about 65 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone. The traffic stop took place on Highway 25 in Travelers Rest, S.C., near Club Drive.
Investigators with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office say McCaffrey was in the Travelers Rest Area to visit a woman with which he hoped to become romantically involved. The speeding ticket was written hours before the West Ashley man reported his wife, Marjorie Gayle McCaffrey missing.
According to the incident report, Robert McCaffrey attempted to hand the officer his cell phone when the officer approached his truck's window. The officer reportedly noticed a handgun on the center armrest of the truck. According to the report, the gun was loaded, and every other round of ammunition had a blue plastic tip. The officer said the gun came back registered to McCaffrey.
When asked where he was headed, according to the report, McCaffrey said he was in the area to see a girlfriend, but that she had blown him off.
McCaffrey was written a ticket for speeding. According to the report, he told the officer, "I am going through a lot of problems."
Gayle McCaffrey was reported missing by her husband on March 18 at 5:16 p.m. On Wednesday, May 3, Robert McCaffrey was named by the Charleston County Sheriff's Office as the primary suspect.
