Deputies investigating early morning crash in Summerville

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- Two people died as a result of an early morning single-car accident in Summerville.

According to Charleston County officials, the driver of a Pontiac sedan fled a traffic checkpoint on College Park Road instead of stopping, turned on to Highway 17A and then on to Ridge Church Road where the car left the roadway and crashed into a tree.

Investigators said the car was moving too fast and the driver lost control in a curve.

The passenger in the vehicle died at the scene of the accident, the coroner's office said. The driver was taken to a nearby hospital and died a short time later. The coroner's office reports that the passenger was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Officials with the Highway Patrol and the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office tried to follow the car after it drove through the checkpoint, but only found it after the accident happened, officials said.

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office was called in to investigate the accident.

The coroner's office has identified the driver as 52-year-old Gerald Washington ofSummerville. The passenger was identified as 50-year-old Dwayne Pierce, also of Summerville.
