NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- An inmate death at the Al Cannon Detention Center in North Charleston has sparked a multi-agency investigation.
According to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, deputies, the Charleston County Coroner's Office and the State Law Enforcement Division are looking into the death of an inmate that happened late Monday night.
The coroner's office identified the inmate as 53-year-old Joseph Grant III. Officials said there was no trauma and no foul play was suspected. However, it will be several weeks before the autopsy report is ready.
Officials say an inmate was found unresponsive on the floor of the detention center's medical unit around 11:40 p.m. Medical crews tried CPR and took the man to Medical University Hospital where he was declared dead.
Officials say the inmate was in the booking area earlier in the day and had a seizure. He was then taken to the medical unit for observation, officials said.
While the inmate's name has not been released, officials said the man was initially arrested by North Charleston police on an outstanding bench warrant.
An autopsy is planned and SLED is leading the death investigation.
