Deputies: Man beat children, left them on the side of the road

      HOLLYWOOD, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Charleston man was arrested and charged with assaulting three young children on Friday.

      According to a Charleston County Sheriff's Office report, 36-year-old Michael Butler, of Line Street in Charleston, was charged with second-degree assault and injury to a child.

      The report states that a deputy was flagged down by a woman on Highway 17 near the town of Hollywood and told the officer that three children, ages 10, 4 and 5, had been hit several times by a man later identified as Butler.{}

      The woman said Butler had been drinking and using drugs, adding that he became angry when the three children in the back of Butler's car started arguing.

      The woman said while the car was still rolling, Butler turned around and moved into the back seat to hit the 10-year-old child in the face. Doctors later said the victim had a possible broken nose and possible jaw.

      After hitting the 10-year-old, Butler forced the three children and the woman out of the car and drove away, leaving them standing in Highway 17.

      Butler was arrested and is being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center.
