Deputies say Florida trucker shot at other driver during road rage incident

RAVENEL, S.C. (WCIV) - A truck driver from Florida was arrested Wednesday on assault charges after deputies say he was involved in a road rage incident in Ravenel.

According to Charleston County deputies, 55-year-old Curtis Ray Whitehurst, of St. Petersburg, Fla., was charged with two counts of first-degree assault and battery.

Deputies say Whitehurst was driving his semi-truck north on Highway 17 in Ravenel when he intentionally hit a pickup truck on its side and fired a shot into the rear bumper of the pickup truck.

The pickup truck pulled over at a nearby gas station to call police, deputies said. Whitehurst also stopped a short way down the highway and fired another shot, deputies added.

Deputies did not say what sparked the road rage.

Whitehurst's bond hearing is set for Thursday morning.
