Coroner IDs body found as missing boater

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- A body was found by Charleston County deputies Sunday morning on the Stono River near where a boater was reported missing more than a day earlier. The coroner's office identified the body as that of a missing boater.

According to Charleston County deputies, the body of the man was found near Ross Marine on Johns Island around 10 a.m. Sunday. The coroner's office identified the man as 39-year-old George Hank Melfi of Charleston.{}

Deputies had been searching for a boater missing since early Saturday morning when he fell into the river while trying to dock. According to deputies, crews were called to the Limehouse Boat Landing on Johns Island around 2:30 a.m. Saturday to search for the boater.

Officials say two boaters were on the Stono River on a 13-foot Boston Whaler when they had engine problems. While trying to tie the boat to a dock, one of the boaters reportedly fell in.

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol and Dive Team, Charleston County Rescue and fire, United States Coast Guard, Department of Natural Resources, and the Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy Service were all involved in the search.
