Development phase of SC plantation beginning

{}{} CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Ground is being broken in Charleston on new park amenities at McLeod Plantation.The Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission purchased the plantation from the Historic Charleston Foundation for $3.3 million three years ago. Since then there have been studies on how best to preserve the plantation while providing public access.There has also been stabilization work on the plantation buildings, including slave cabins, dating to the 18th century.The new phase of work beginning Tuesday consists of interior repair work to the main plantation house, several cabins, a garage, and the gin house.Additional parking lots, a welcome center, a pavilion, and a small maintenance building also will be built.
