      DHEC head honoring Boeing for environmental work

      NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP/WCIV) -- South Carolina is honoring Boeing for its environmental record.

      State Department of Health and Environmental Control Director Catherine Templeton is scheduled to visit the aerospace manufacturer's North Charleston plant on Tuesday.

      "Boeing's expansion to South Carolina has been notable on so many levels, but their commitment to doing business in a thoughtful, environmentally responsible manner has been truly impressive," said Templeton.{} "We all see the{}environmentally innovative{}airplanes being built here; but what you should also know about are the{}modern recycling programs, the waste-to-energy fuel conversion, the stormwater-to-irrigation capture, the hybrid vehicle use, and the many other responsible{}steps this company is taking to protect our environment{}while{}expanding our economy."

      Boeing is being honored as the newest member of the South Carolina Environmental Excellence Program for its environmental accomplishments. Members of the program are being honored for helping protect the environment by reducing pollution and reducing the consumption of energy and other resources.{}

      "Acceptance into the S.C. Environmental Excellence Program is an honor, and a validation of the{}Boeing South Carolina site's environmental programs," said Jack Jones, BSC vice president and general manager. "We continue to explore new ways to improve our site's environmental responsibility and we are excited about the new possibilities that membership in this program brings."

      Boeing has a solar array on the roof of its 787 assembly plant that is the largest rooftop solar installation in the Southeast, ranked by production capacity. The array generates 2.6-megawatts of power.

      Since coming to South Carolina, Boeing has also earned{}a number of other{}awards and recognition for their environmentally conscious efforts and achievements:

      • S.C. Manufacturer's Association - 2012 Excellence in Corporate Responsibility Award
