Police: Shooting victim dies, suspect charged with murder

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- One person was killed Wednesday evening in a shooting in North Charleston.

According to North Charleston police, the shooting happened at 4657 West Montague Ave. around 7 p.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found one man had been shot and was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. He later died at Medical University Hospital, police said.

Police found a suspect nearby and took him into custody. He was identified as Dustin Quadrell Backman. Police said Backman was charged with murder.

According to police, a black Kia was leaving the mobile home park where the shooting happened, and nearly hit the victim. Witnesses told police that the victim hit the car and confronted the driver, which led to a fight and the shooting.

The coroner's office identified the victim 29-year-old Antwan Chaplain.
