DNR conducts safety checkpoints this holiday weekend

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Compared to 11 years ago, the number of boating accidents are down statewide. In 2011, the Department of Natural Resources responded to 98 boating accidents. In 2001, they handled 137.

The most recent stats from the agency show there were 19 fatalities in 2011.

To keep those statistics from rising, DNR is out in full force this Memorial Day weekend. LCpl. Brian Crawford says the goal isn't necessarily to ticket violators.

"We stop people to educate them to tell them what they have to make sure they have what they have to prevent an accident," said Crawford.

With many people celebrating the holiday, DNR is also making sure boaters drink responsibly.

"It's legal to drink in a boat. It's just illegal to be drunk and drive. You can't drink until the point of intoxication, so we tell people that," said Crawford.

If you are out on the water, and you notice anything suspicious or boating violations, all you have to do is contact DNR. You can reach them by dialing 1-800-922-5431.
