DOC looking for escaped convict

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- The South Carolina Department of Corrections is looking for an escaped convict who officials say walked away from his Mount Pleasant job site Wednesday.

According to the state DOC, Billy Jack Hanna was serving five years for a grand larceny charge.

Officials say he was assigned to the Coastal Pre-release Center, a minimum security facility located in Charleston and has been missing since around 12:30 p.m.

According to John Barkley with the SC Dept. of Corrections,{} Hanna has been working at Pleasant Places Lawn Care on Long Point Road since July 26. Barkley says a DOC staff member arrived to pick up the inmate, it was discovered that he escaped. Barkley tells us Hanna was scheduled to be released in July 2013.{} If and when Hanna is found, he will forfeit his work eligibility and will no longer be assigned to a minimum security facility. Barkley also says if Hanna is found guilty of escape, additional time could be added to his sentence.

Hanna is described as a 41-year-old white male, about six feet tall and weighing about 197 pounds. He has brown hair, brown eyes and a scar near his left ear.
