Chihuahua killed in Moncks Corner mobile home fire

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV) -- The air around a Moncks Corner mobile home smelled of{}thick smoke early Tuesday morning.

Officials with the Whitesville Fire Department say a fire destroyed a home on Gaillard Road in Moncks Corner around 5 a.m. The fire was put out in 20 minutes.

Two residents were able to escape the fire without injury thanks to being alerted by their smoke alarm. Eight Chihuahua dogs were also kept in the home. One of the smaller dogs died in the fire, according to officials, despite attempts at CPR by firefighters.{}

According to Chief Tim Stephenson of the Whitesville Fire Department, they believe the fire started in water heater area of home. He said the fire "engulfed" the home while the owners were trying to rescue all of the dogs but they could not save the last one in time.Chief Stephenson believes the trailer a total loss and said the owner didn't have insurance.Moncks Corner Rural Fire District was the primary responders, assisted by the Whitesville Fire Department. The Berkeley County Sheriff's Department helped with traffic due to the fog and the hydrant being located across the road.
