WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) -- Downed power lines backed up traffic on two main highways through West Ashley Friday afternoon.
According to Charleston Police Department spokesman Charles Francis, lines were down near the Byrnes Downs and Avondale neighborhoods after a car struck a utility pole, breaking it in half. The accident happened at about 1:30 p.m.
Francis said the accident happened near Highway 17 and Wesley Drive.
The driver has been cited for the incident, Francis said.
There were only a small number of power outages in the area as a result of the incident, but people in traffic said the backups extended for nearly a mile on Savannah Highway and St. Andrews Boulevard.
The repairs were expected to be done sometime Friday afternoon.
