Driver, 12, leads Goose Creek police on chase after hit-and-run

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCIV) - A 12-year-old boy is in some hot water after he was caught behind the wheel of a stolen car, police said.

According to a police report, officers were sent to the Wal-Mart on St. James Avenue Thursday evening in response to a hit-and-run. While headed to the scene, officers spotted the vehicle witnesses described as leaving the scene.

Police say the boy did not stop for blue lights, opting instead to get onto Highway 52, Highway 78 and then head east on Interstate 26.

The driver drove around one set of stop sticks police had placed across the roadway by North Charleston police, but was unable to avoid a second set. He was stopped at Montague Avenue and I-26, according to police.

The 12-year-old, whose identity is not being released because he is a juvenile, was taken into custody and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, failure to stop for a blue light, leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license.

The boy was taken to jail, but then moved to a juvenile justice home in Goose Creek.
