SCHP: Driver killed after hitting tree in Ridgeville

      RIDGEVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident that occurred Sunday afternoon.

      According to SCHP officials, the one-car wreck happened around 3:45 p.m. on Secondary 174 at Carter Road.

      The driver of a Crown Victoria was reportedly traveling west on Secondary 174 when he went off the road, overcorrected, went off the road again and struck a tree.

      The driver was pronounced dead on the scene from apparent massive head trauma despite wearing a seatbelt.

      The coroner has identified the driver as 56-year-old John D. Kemmerlin of Ridgeville.

      It is not know what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
