Edisto Island man arrested for downtown Charleston burglaries
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- An Edisto Island man wanted in a string of recent burglaries in downtown Charleston was arrested this morning, minutes before another burglary was reported in which he ended up being the suspect.
According to Charleston police, 35-year-old Maurice Watson was charged with four counts of first-degree burglary, four counts of property crime enhancement, and one count of marijuana possession.
Police say a patrol officer approached Watson around 8:45 a.m. Monday at President Street near the Crosstown. When other officers showed up, Watson agreed to talk to them.
Watson reportedly pulled out a small Ziploc bag of marijuana when he was asked if he had any drugs on him, a police statement reads. Police said he was also carrying a bag that contained a laptop, a PlayStation, a baseball cap and a speaker. Watson reportedly told the officers that he had just stolen the items from a St. Philip Street apartment.
Police returned the stolen items to the victims.
Police also charged Watson with burglaries on April 7, April 14, and April 25.
Watson is being held in the Al Cannon Detention Center until a bond hearing.
