EEOC sues BMW for discrimination at SC plant

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - BMW Manufacturing Co. is being sued over alleged discrimination at its South Carolina plant.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said Tuesday BMW discriminated against black workers using a criminal background check policy. Sixty-nine black employees worked for a contractor who staffed a BMW warehouse. The EEOC says that contractor's policy was not to employ anyone with a criminal record within the past seven years.

When that contractor stopped doing work with BMW, the EEOC says the automaker did ran its own background checks on the logistics workers, firing any with criminal records from any year. Some employees had worked at BMW for more than a decade, and most of those fired were black.

BMW officials did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
