Ellen donates $50,000 to Lowcountry school

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) - It's been an engagement to remember for a Summerville couple, and it was made possible by Ellen Degeneres.

Brad Emerton and Jen Balyeat are both teachers at Newington Elementary School in Summerville, and{}are engaged to be married in April. In February,{}the couple made{}their first appearance on Ellen.{}During that episode Brad told Ellen how{}he had to{}sell his{}car to buy Jen an engagement ring. That's when Ellen{}gave the couple an all expense paid honeymoon and a new car.{}{}

Fast forward a few weeks later. Thursday night, Ellen surprised the couple with a second surprise -- this time for their school.{}The two were given a check for $50,000 to better their school. The donation was made possible by SKYPE, as part of their "SKYPE IN THE CLASSROOM" program. {}

"Budgets are being slashed and cut. And, to have just a little bit of help just to help out some extra programs and help these kids have an opportunity to learn just like everyone else, just is pretty amazing," said Brad.

Newington Elementary is a Title 1 school where a large percentage of the students live below the poverty index.

"I have a son who has epilepsy and who is also in the IEP program and everything and this school is amazing," said Meredith Hayes.{}"So, that really touches my heart."

"I am so proud and its definitely never in a million years imagine would happen at our school in little old Summerville," said Cammy Groome, principal of the school.

School officials say they do not yet know how the money will be spent but, said the students will have a chance to share their ideas.
