CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Hurricane season begins Saturday and Charleston County officials are doing what they can to make sure the Lowcountry is prepared.
The Charleston County Emergency Management Department has put together an emergency supply kit. Officials say because of the low-lying areas in Charleston County, there will never be enough safe places for shelter, so they encourage making travel arrangements as much in advance as possible.
"The importance of having a plan, I can not stress that enough. It's very important for our citizens to have that emergency plan for their families, know their evacuation routes, know where they are going to go when they do have to evacuate, know whether they have to evacuate," said Cathy Haynes, the chief of operations for emergency management.
Evacuation orders can only be given by the governor.
