Faculty, staff at Memminger practice for emergencies

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston County students may be out of school, but teachers and faculty are hard at work making sure kids will be safe when they return.

At Memminger Elementary on Thursday, school officials practiced emergency drills and how to react in the event of an emergency.

The principal said the deadly mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., prompted them to review all of their security plans.

"What the drill does is gives us an opportunity to practice so we can make it second hand. The more we practice the more those skills are ingrained so that if something happens we would be ready," said Dr. Teresa Turner.

Turner added that she wanted the newer teachers to feel comfortable with the drills. She said students will practice next week.
