"Famously Hot" Columbia vies for tourists

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - When you think of visiting South Carolina, thoughts of the seashore or waterfalls in the mountains probably first come to mind. But in between the mountains and the sea, the Columbia area has been vying for visitors.

The ad campaign advertising the area and its attractions as "Famously Hot" has gained steam in recent years.

Kim Jamieson, a spokeswoman for the Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports and Tourism says conservatively about a million visitors a year flock to Columbia.

While that pales in comparison to places like Myrtle Beach and Charleston, she says the capital city is working to attract visitors to a wide range of attractions - from cultural and entertainment offerings to big time university athletics and outdoor attractions such as the nearby Congaree National Park.
